For Sieb Posthuma (1960-2014), art began with looking. There are lines running from his illustrations to the sunny palettes of Matisse and David Hockney and to the graphic, colourful fashion images of his youth. Many people knew him from his picture books about his dog Rintje and Aadje Piraatje, the little pirate, but Posthuma also created covers for books for grown-ups, illustrations for newspapers and magazines and designed sets and costumes for the theatre.
Sieb Posthuma – From Then to Here and Now Onwards focuses on his ideas about inspiration and artistry. Joukje Akveld spoke to the two-time winner of the Gouden Penseel for the best illustrated children’s book of the year and to his friends and his colleagues, in order to create this remarkable portrait of an exceptional artist and the person behind the art, lavishly illustrated with drawings and photographs. The result is a wonderful book about the joy of creativity and the consoling power of art.

This book was published to coincide with the opening of the exhibition Een vijver vol inkt – kleur je wereld met Sieb Posthuma (A Pond Full of Ink – Colour Your World with Sieb Posthuma) at the Literatuurmuseum in The Hague.

'A vibrant biography. Further evidence of Akveld’s skill.'

de Volkskrant

'A book that, if it were not a biography, could have been a novel. Joukje Akveld does what Sieb Posthuma does. She paints him. In words, actions, images. And, by doing so, she sketches a new genre.'

Tubantia

'A very beautiful book.'
